This was the third game of Descent I'd played at Good Games Ballarat, and this time I was joined by Tim, Liam and either Nash or Dillon as their three adventurers finally managed to get through the first dungeon quest successfully.

I've generally found Descent a lot easier for the heroes when there are more of them, despite the monsters being tougher. Four players (one Overlord and three heroes) is probably the sweet spot for the game, and they certainly rollicked along in this game.

Two warriors and one rogue (according to their skills) and there was a lot of damage on the table. My beastmen made early inroads, but were unable to slow the adventurers much. The group didn't linger too much, despite my fairly constant spawning of monsters behind them.

The chests were also kind to them, and soon they had a rather dangerous set of weapons. The spiders I spawned were rather useless, but the beastmen kept proving their worth, even if they were going down quickly. I managed to kill one hero, then another, but they'd gained a good stock of conquest tokens by then and weren't in danger of losing. I needed a good run of monsters!

Going up the centre rather than to the side was greatly in their favour: it allowed them to get to the silver treasure quicker and that made the ogre and his minions just so much sword fodder as they grabbed the runekey to allow them to reach Narthak.

The manticores guarding Narthak did some damage, and I was hoping that when Narthak attacked all three heroes at once with his sweep attack that he'd be able to kill one or two of them. Alas, the dreaded "X" appeared on the red die and he missed them all!

The heroes didn't let him have another chance, and just surrounded and slew him.

Narthak falls!

Hooray! The land is safe from the evil giant!

More quests await, though. With any luck, I should get in another game or two this weekend - if my plans of having a month of playing Descent a lot hold up!

I would give this a good read through.

The game balance section is particularly useful and insightful on some of the workings of the game.

The heroes and overlord tactics are also handy as well.
